Council-Sponsored Event: YTI's Staged Reading of "The Lepers of Penikese"

Your Theater, Inc. of New Bedford, MA presents a staged reading of Raymond P. Veary, Jr.'s play The Lepers of Penikese from October 7 through 9, 2011.

A staged reading is part of the play-writing process where actors dramatically read through a work-in-progress. YTI has a 65-year history of supporting and developing new theatrical projects.

The Lepers of Penikese dramatizes the experiences of residents of Penikese Island (one of the Elizabeth Islands located in Buzzard's Bay) and the lepers' treatment facility that operated there from 1905 through 1921. The story unfolds when 17-year-old Archie Thomas, diagnosed with leprosy, is quarantined and sent to Penikese. His widowed mother demands to go with him. Archie, both character and narrator, builds and operates his own wireless telegraph, linking this small group of leprosy patients to the outside world.

Performances on Oct. 7 and 8 are at 8:00 p.m., the Oct. 9 performance is a 2:30 p.m. matinee. Tickets are $10 and reservations are recommended by contacting YTI at 508-993-0772 or boxoffice@yourtheatre.org.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the New Bedford, Fairhaven and Dartmouth Cultural Councils, local agencies supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
